The Erie Canal

Why was the Erie canal needed?

The difficult route

Separating the 13 colonies from the rich midwest were the Appalachian mountains. Transport, which is essential to trade, was hard due to the rough route. It often took weeks or months for the cargo to move from the coast to the midwest which limited the trade to the coast [1]. The canal was expected to bring in more people from the coast to the midwest as well as provide more space for the new American settlers. Forging an easy way from the fertile midwest to the ports of New York was certain to greatly improve the economy as it will carry goods to the fertile land and carry the produce from that land to New York ports [1].
